Narrative
My family and I enjoy visiting zoos, so of course when we decided to take a trip to Malaysia we made sure to check out the zoo in the city we were staying in. We stayed at a hotel in the city of Melaka just south of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s largest city. The zoo is the second largest in Malaysia at 54 acres in size:
We walked up to the ticket booth and like most thing in Malaysia we were amazed by how cheap it was to go inside. The tickets were about $4 per adult US. This was definitely a bargain considering how many animals we were able to see at this zoo. The largest collection of animals appeared to be various primates:
No primate display would be complete without lemurs:
The orangutan show the zoo puts on is a must see. We were pretty amazed by how intelligent the orangutans are:
A really beautiful animal they had on display was the endangered red panda:
I think when most people think of rhinoceros they think of Africa. However, Malaysia and Indonesia are actually home to rhinos as well:
The rhinos that live in the jungles of Malaysia and Indonesia do not grow to the size of their African counterparts, but they are still big animals:
Malaysia is also home to elephants:
Of course visitors can take rides on the elephants as well:
Probably the most unusual native animal they had on display was one of the tiny deer that lives in the jungles of Malaysia:
Another native animal in the zoo were a large contingent of fruit bats:
The zoo did have plenty of African animals on display as well such as giraffes and zebras:
As well as ostriches:
Here is an oryx:
Here is an endangered Moon Bear who really seem to enjoy posing for the crowds:
I am not sure what this next animal is but he looked mean:
Here was some massive water buffalo they had on display:
The zoo even had one of my favorite Australian wildlife on display, the cassowary:
With this being Southeast Asia there was also plenty of reptiles on display such as this iguana:
There was a few snakes on display such as this python:
Here is quite possibly the most dangerous creature in the zoo which is the saltwater crocodile which often caused me to get nervous whenever I visited areas in northern Australia:
Here is a freshwater crocodile which is known for being far less dangerous than their saltwater cousins:
Here is a closer look at the jaws of the freshwater crocodile that are no where near as intimidating as a saltwater crocodile:
Conclusion
The Melaka Zoo is not the best zoo we have ever been to, but it has a large variety of animals and is extremely affordable. The orangutan show is a must for anyone visiting the zoo. If visiting the area the Melaka Zoo is well worth spending a morning at like we did.
