On Walkabout At: K-Bob’s Steakhouse In Truth or Consequences, New Mexico
|Recently my wife and I were driving through Truth or Consequences, New Mexico and stopped to get gas as well as find some place to get lunch. I hadn’t realized it but TorC is home to one of the K-BOB’s Steakhouse restaurants. K-BOB’s is the steakhouse my wife and I often stop at whenever we are visiting Ruidoso, New Mexico. K-BOB’s is a chain of steakhouses located across 16 locations in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Colorado. What I find interesting about the locations of the K-BOB’s restaurants is that they are not located in any major city. For example the two major cities in the area where I live, El Paso and Albuquerque do not have a K-BOB’s, but the much smaller cities of Ruidoso and Truth & Consquences do. Even in the other states none of the major cities like Dallas, Houston, Denver, etc. have K-BOB’s. It seems like they are intentionally targeting smaller towns that have a country/western vibe to it.
The K-BOB’s in Ruidoso is nicely furnished with of course country/western interior however the K-BOB’s in TorC is not as nicely decorated though I did like seeing the head of this oryx mounted on the wall:
For those that don’t know, the oryx is not native to New Mexico. According to the National Park Service website this animal was brought from the Kalahari Desert in Africa to an experimental range at Red Rock, New Mexico. Federal law prohibits introducing a wild animal from another country into the wild in the US, so offspring were obtained at this experimental range to introduce onto the White Sands Missile Range. Between 1969 and 1977, 93 oryx were released on White Sands Missile Range. There are now about 3000 animals roaming the wilds around WSMR. Annual hunts for the oryx began in 1974 on the Missile Range to keep their numbers manageable. The oryx is a large animal that can weigh up to 450 pounds and they stand 47 inches at the shoulder. Both males and females have horns that average 34 inches long. Their brown coloring with distinctive black and white markings allows them to hide among desert shrubs. I have seen these animals up close and they are extremely large. A friend of mine actually got a license to hunt one oo these animals and he told me the meat from the one he killed was not very tasty if anyone is wondering.
Anyway the ribeye I ordered at K-BOB’s that was smothered with cheese and peppers was tasty:
My wife on the other hand just ordered a regular ribeye which is what she always orders at the K-BOB’s in Ruidoso as well:
We both found our meals to be quite good. Also the service here was excellent as well. Our waitress was very friendly and made sure we received our food, drinks, and refills in a timely manner. So all in all this K-BOB’s was of equal quality to the one in Ruidoso other than it is a bit smaller and not as nicely decorated. However, if you are just looking for a good steak and friendly service you can’t go wrong with the K-BOB’s in TorC.
