Australia once carried on a thriving export trade in leeches. Related to the European medicinal leech, which sold in London for the equivalent today of about $100 each, they were even released into the Thames in an effort to replenish stocks. Abandoned by the medical profession by the 1930s modern research has led to renewed interest in leeches.
