Bob Brown Blames Bushfires On Global Warming

Australian Greens political party leader Bob Brown is the absolute scum of the Earth to me right now:

Greens leader Bob Brown says bushfires like the ones raging across Victoria and New South Wales this weekend will be more frequent if climate change continues…

“Global warming is predicted to make this sort of event happen 25 per cent, 50 per cent more,” he told Sky News.

“It’s a sobering reminder of the need for this nation and the whole world to act and put at a priority our need to tackle climate change.”

It is incredible that this guy is using this tragedy to advance his own political agenda.  What does global warming have to do with arsonists setting fires?

Someone can also easily make the argument that the Greenies are responsible for the fire because they prevent grazing in the high country as well as well as back burning to reduce the amount of fuel for these fires to burn.  However, there is no evidence to say that would have made a difference just like Bob Brown has no evidence that people driving their SUV’s less would have prevented this fire.

It is totally inappropriate and shows what a demagogue and heartless person he is.

The terrible toll these bushfires created was due to arsonists not people driving around in their SUV's. There have been prior large fires in Australia the same size as this one that didn't need people driving their SUV's to cause. The eco-system of the Australian bush is made to burn and bushfires are a fact of life in Australia. This one was just so bad because so many fires were started next to population centers. Bob Brown should be ashamed of himself by trying to score political points during a national crisis. I would say the same thing about anyone… Read more »

I can't believe that you're accusing him of political motivations – he's scientifically correct. A simple google of 'bushfires and climate change' will show you how climate change has been predicted (for years!) to lead to an increase in fire danger! I advocte for solving climate change because I want to prevent future tragedies like this one. I am concerned for the people who have just been so badly affected, but also for those who will be in the future. Unless our politics and our lifestyles dramatically change to become lower-carbon, this sort of thing – this horrible tragedy –… Read more »

Arsonists start fires. To say that their acctions are totally horrendous is more than an understatement.

But not every fire that an arsonist starts will kill 173 people.

Ever-drier conditions and higher temperatures make for the conditions that can turn a small roadside fire into an uncontrollable bushfire inferno. THAT is what climate change does.

Arsonists are certainly responsible for a sizeable percentage of these bushfires and of course bushfires predate the existence of humans. Nonetheless, you have not addressed the crux of Senator Brown's statement; the more intense heatwaves are and the more vegetation dries up, the larger bushfires will be and the further they will spread across Australia (hence the more damage they generally cause). Now, what contributes to more intense heatwaves and more prolonged droughts? The answer is climate change. What do the majority of authorities conclude is the cause of climate change? Increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through… Read more »

Bob Brown is indeed correct. Perhaps he should have waited a few weeks to make his comments out of respect for those who have suffered. However, it is true that climate change will make such events more frequent. The links are complex, but it is not helpful to simply conclude that "SUV's don't cause bushfires" and leave it at that. Additionally it is ludicrous to call Climate Change a political issue. The ecosystems of the earth neither know about or care about human politics. It is an ESTABLISHED FACT that it is happening, the effects are and will be catastrophic,… Read more »

It was bad management of the bush by the victorian government and the shire councils that caused this. Melbourne had only one bad heatwave the rest of the summer had been cool. The fire experts had pleaded with the govt to do some backburning to clear the debris on the ground but to no avail.

Barbara, I think a non-partisan investigation into the fires should be done before trying to assign blame. But after reading this article in The Age, the Sheahan family in Mitchellshire would definitely agree with you.

The climate bed-wetters are nuts and need to be locked away for perpetrating perpetual lies about global warming. Global warming is not science but junk science designed by the left wing establishment and their cronies to destroy local and world commerce.

The left is totally bankrupt. We should be giving these eco-fascists a hard time.
