Colorado Springs city officials said the closure, which starts sometime in August, is a necessary sacrifice owing to the challenges of working on the precipitous slope, which rises 2,000 feet in roughly a mile along a restricted rail corridor.

“If we don’t tackle the issues facing the Incline now, we may not have the Incline in the very near future,” said landscape architect and project manager Sarah Bryarly, detailing how flooding last year severely damaged as much as 30 percent of the trail.

The work is expected to wrap up in December. Anyone caught defying the closure could face a $100 ticket, Bryarly said. [The Gazette]
