A quarter-tonne of cocaine with a street value of more than 80 million US dollars has been seized in Australia after being shipped in from Southeast Asia, police said Wednesday.
Three people were arrested after customs officers found the drugs labelled as green tea in a shipping container of furniture delivered to a Sydney warehouse.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione described the size of the drugs haul as “staggering”.
“This is 250 kilogrammes (550 pounds) of cocaine that will not be adding to Australia’s drug misery,” he told reporters.
Detective Chief Inspector John Lehmann said a tip-off about suspicious transfers of millions of dollars to accounts in Southeast Asia led authorities to an organised crime syndicate. [AFP]
